My Dog is My Hero Because…
Last year my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This was especially troubling because I had lost my father to this vicious disease just two years earlier. My mother was extremely difficult to deal with. I was depressed and stressed beyond belief.
Then Chili came into my life.
It was a spontaneous decision. A breeder we know called to say that she had too many puppies. She had a little white pup she would give me. As he curled up in my arms, I could not believe my luck. Every day since that day in October 2011, I cannot believe what a difference that dog has made in my life. He became my refuge. He made me laugh and smile. Since he was a puppy, he was a lot of work. That helped me focus on something other than the difficult conversations and decisions surrounding my mother. Dogs teach us to be in the moment. Since then, my mother has moved to an assisted living facility. She is content now and loves Chili almost as much as my husband and I do. In this picture, our Chili Dog is giving his daddy a hug.
